Military family budget app

Track BAH, BAS, and PCS move costs — plus deployment emergency fund goals — in one manual ledger.

Last updated on

Military family finances differ from a typical household: Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) and Basic Allowance for Subsistence (BAS) arrive on top of base pay, PCS moves create a surge of one-time costs, and deployments mean months of variable spending with no service member at home. This page is a narrative + checklist for a military family budget setup — follow the workflow links for step-by-step how-tos.

Expense Trail dashboard

Who this is for

Active-duty service members, reservists on long orders, and their spouses managing the household budget alone during deployments. If you are overseas and dealing with foreign currency, Expense Trail supports multiple wallets in different currencies — you log amounts manually in whichever currency you received them.

Expense Trail does not provide legal or benefits advice. For questions about SCRA protections, BAH rate changes, or entitlement rules, consult your installation's JAG office or a military legal assistance attorney.

Goals

  • BAH and BAS income categories — log each allowance separately from base pay
  • PCS wallet — isolate move costs so they do not distort your normal monthly view
  • Deployment budget freeze — cap variable categories during deployment months
  • Emergency fund goal — build a deployment gap reserve tracked inside Expense Trail
  • Multi-currency wallet — for overseas assignments paid partly in local currency

Checklist

  • Create income categories for BAH, BAS, and base pay
  • Create a dedicated PCS wallet for move-related expenses
  • Set a monthly budget for each major spending category
  • Add an emergency fund savings goal for deployment gaps
  • Freeze or reduce variable budget caps before deployment start
  • Add a foreign-currency wallet if stationed or deployed overseas
  • Share relevant wallets with spouse for household visibility during deployment

Workflow

Managing a PCS move

PCS orders arrive fast and costs pile up before reimbursement: deposits, truck rental, short-term lodging, school enrollment fees. Create a PCS wallet at the start of orders and log every move cost there. Once the move is complete and DITY / PPM reimbursement lands, log that as income in the same wallet and archive it. Your household wallet stays uncluttered.

Expense Trail does not connect to the Defense Travel System or pull DITY reimbursement figures automatically. Log reimbursements as manual income entries.

Deployment period — freezing variable budgets

When the service member deploys, discretionary categories (dining out, entertainment, fuel) typically drop. Before departure, lower those monthly budget caps in Budgets to match realistic deployment-period spending. The spouse managing the home front sees accurate budget bars, not inflated pre-deployment caps. Restore the original caps when the service member returns.

Emergency fund goal for deployment gaps

Pay can be delayed or complicated by deployment, combat zone tax exclusions, or banking access. Set a savings goal named "Deployment Reserve" in Expense Trail and log a transfer into it each payday. Track the running balance manually — Expense Trail does not pull balances from financial institutions, so the number reflects what you tell it.

Honest limits

Expense Trail does not link to banks, DFAS, or myPay. It does not calculate BAH rates by zip code, file taxes, or know your leave-and-earnings statement. You enter what you receive; the app helps you see where it goes. For rate look-ups or entitlement questions, use official DoD resources or JAG.

First 30 minutes

  1. Install on iOS, Android, or web — guest mode works without an account.
  2. Create income categories: Base Pay, BAH, BAS (and OHA or COLA if applicable overseas).
  3. Create wallets from the Example setup table: Household, PCS Move, and one per foreign currency if overseas.
  4. Add an emergency fund goal: Deployment Reserve with your target amount.
  5. Log one month of income entries so Dashboard shows real totals — future-you will trust the data.

Frequently asked questions

Is Expense Trail free for military families?

Yes — core tracking, wallets, budgets, goals, and CSV export are free without ads. See Is Expense Trail really free?.

Can I track BAH separately from base pay?

Yes. Create separate income categories — "Base Pay," "BAH," and "BAS" — and log each allowance as its own income entry. Reports will then show each source independently.

What about overseas deployment with a different currency?

Create an additional wallet labeled with the currency (for example "Kuwait — KWD"). Log local-currency expenses in that wallet using the amount in local currency. Expense Trail does not convert currencies automatically; note the exchange rate you used in the memo field if you want a record.

Can my spouse see the budget while I am deployed?

Household sharing lets you give a partner visibility into selected wallets and budgets. Both of you need an Expense Trail account. See wallets for sharing setup.

Does Expense Trail help with SCRA interest caps or military benefits?

No. Expense Trail is a manual personal finance tracker, not a legal or benefits tool. For SCRA protections, BAH dispute processes, or entitlement calculations, contact your installation's JAG office or military legal assistance program.
