How to track Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) debt
Track Klarna, Afterpay, and Affirm balances with wallets and scheduled entries.
Buy Now Pay Later services like Klarna, Afterpay, and Affirm make it easy to split purchases into installments — and equally easy to lose track of how much you owe across all of them. Expense Trail helps you track buy now pay later BNPL debt with wallets and scheduled entries, entirely through manual logging. No bank linking required.
BNPL debt accumulates invisibly across services. Each app only shows its own balance. Tracking manually in Expense Trail forces you to see the full picture that individual BNPL apps hide.
Before you start
You need at least one main wallet (e.g. Checking) already set up in Expense Trail. Gather your current outstanding balance from each BNPL service before you begin. Guest mode works without an account.
Example wallet setup
| BNPL Service | Wallet name | Starting balance (what you owe) |
|---|---|---|
| Klarna | Klarna Debt | $180.00 |
| Afterpay | Afterpay Debt | $95.00 |
| Affirm | Affirm Debt | $320.00 |
Enter the current outstanding balance as a positive number — this wallet tracks what you owe, not what you have.
Steps
Create a wallet for each BNPL service under Wallets → Add wallet. Name it clearly (e.g. "Klarna Debt") and enter your current outstanding balance.
You should see: Each BNPL service has its own wallet showing exactly what you owe today.
When you make a new BNPL purchase, log it as an expense from your main wallet (the category where the spending belongs, e.g. Clothing), then add the same amount to the matching BNPL wallet as a balance increase.
You should see: Your spending category reflects the purchase; the BNPL wallet balance grows to match your new debt.
Add each installment payment as a scheduled entry. Set the source as your checking wallet, destination as the BNPL wallet, amount as the installment, and repeat on the installment due date.
You should see: Upcoming installments appear in your bills calendar so you never miss a payment date.
Decide on a total BNPL limit you are comfortable carrying (e.g. $500 across all services). Note this limit in a wallet note or set a budget alert for the BNPL category if you use one.
You should see: You have a clear ceiling — when combined wallet balances approach the limit, you know to pause new BNPL purchases.
Monthly review: open each BNPL wallet and add up the totals. If the combined balance is growing month over month, your installments are not keeping up with new purchases.
You should see: A flat or declining combined balance means the debt is under control; a rising total is an early warning sign.
Common mistakes
- Treating BNPL as paid in full — The purchase is not settled until every installment clears. Log the debt immediately on purchase day.
- Forgetting installment dates — Missed payments trigger fees. Use scheduled entries so the bills calendar shows every due date.
- No aggregate view across services — Checking only one BNPL app masks total exposure. Expense Trail wallets give you a single place to add them up.
What Expense Trail does not do
Expense Trail does not link to Klarna, Afterpay, or Affirm accounts directly. It does not import transactions or send payment reminders to the BNPL service. All entries are manual — you are in control of what gets logged.
Frequently asked questions
How do I track installments from multiple services?
Create one wallet per service and one scheduled entry per installment series. When you open Wallets, you see each service's remaining balance at a glance. Add them manually to get your total BNPL exposure.
Should I log the full purchase price or each installment?
Log the full purchase as an expense (so your spending categories reflect reality), then record the total as a balance increase on the BNPL wallet. Each installment payment is then a scheduled transfer that reduces the BNPL wallet balance over time.
What if I return an item?
If the BNPL service refunds the installments, delete or edit the corresponding scheduled entries and reduce the BNPL wallet balance by the refunded amount using a balance adjustment. Do not log it as income — it is a debt reduction.
Can I track BNPL on web and mobile?
Yes — Expense Trail syncs across iOS, Android, and web when you are signed in. Create scheduled entries on any platform and they appear everywhere.
