Shopping place reminders
Get a reminder to log spending when you leave saved places — location stays on your device.
Shopping place reminders (geofence) nudge you to record an expense when you leave a place you saved — a mall, grocery store, or gas station. Location is checked on your device only; coordinates are never uploaded to Expense Trail servers.
Platform support
| Platform | Available? |
|---|---|
| iPhone / Android | Yes |
| Web | No — toggle is disabled with a short note |
Enable reminders
- Settings → Alerts
- Turn on Shopping place reminders
- Read the education sheet, then tap Enable reminders
iOS or Android may ask for location permission — allow it so the app can detect when you leave a saved place.
Save places
- Settings → Alerts → Saved places (or open Geofence places from the row)
- Enter a name — e.g. Westfield Mall
- Tap Save current location while you are at that place
| Limit | Value |
|---|---|
| Maximum places | 10 |
| Default radius | About 200 m around the saved point |
Delete a place from the list when you no longer need reminders there.
What happens when you leave
- You receive a local notification suggesting you log spending
- Tapping it opens the add expense sheet with a note hint — you still confirm amount and category before saving
This is not continuous GPS tracking — the app checks exit events for places you saved, not your full route history.
Privacy
- Place names and coordinates stay on this device
- See Privacy overview for how Expense Trail handles location in store disclosures
Troubleshooting
| Issue | Try |
|---|---|
| No reminder after leaving | Ensure reminders are on, location permission is Always or While Using per OS guidance, and you are outside the ~200 m radius |
| Cannot save a place | Stand outdoors or near a window; check location services for Expense Trail |
| Limit reached | Remove an old place before adding another (max 10) |
