Migrate from YNAB to Expense Trail
Honest guide: export from YNAB, import to Expense Trail, and what does not transfer.
Switching from YNAB to Expense Trail is manual-first: export what you can, map wallets and categories, and accept that bank sync and some automations will not transfer.
Export from YNAB
- Use YNAB's export or CSV download (format changes—verify before import).
- Note which columns map to date, amount, category, wallet/account, payee.
Import into Expense Trail
Create wallets that match how you think about money (Checking, Cash, Card)—not every YNAB account name must match.
Import via Data import or paste from spreadsheet using migrate from spreadsheet.
Re-create budgets and goals; they rarely import automatically.
For splits, re-add buddies and groups—IOU history may need manual opening balances.
What you will lose
| Often lost | Workaround |
|---|---|
| Bank auto-sync | Manual logging in Expense Trail |
| Investment/net-worth views | Not in scope—daily spending focus |
| Old split settlements | Reconcile with opening balances |
YNAB envelope mindset maps to category budgets; embrace manual entry instead of bank sync.
