How do budgets work with wallets?

Budgets cap spending; wallets hold balances—they solve different problems.

Last updated on

Budgets cap spending over a period (usually monthly). Wallets hold balances. Spending reduces a category or payment-method budget regardless of which wallet paid—unless you scope a budget to a specific wallet or payment method.

Two budget types (often used together)

TypeExampleCounts
Category budgetFood $400/monthAll Food entries
Payment-method budgetCredit card $800/monthAll spend on that card

Rollover

Unused budget can roll over to the next period when enabled—useful for irregular spending like clothing or home maintenance.

Common mistakes

  • Expecting budgets to move wallet balances — Budgets track limits; wallets track account balances.
  • Counting transfers toward category budgets — Transfers between your own wallets are not category spend.
  • Forgetting alerts — Enable budget alerts before you overshoot.
