How do budgets work with wallets?
Budgets cap spending; wallets hold balances—they solve different problems.
Budgets cap spending over a period (usually monthly). Wallets hold balances. Spending reduces a category or payment-method budget regardless of which wallet paid—unless you scope a budget to a specific wallet or payment method.
Two budget types (often used together)
| Type | Example | Counts |
|---|---|---|
| Category budget | Food $400/month | All Food entries |
| Payment-method budget | Credit card $800/month | All spend on that card |
Rollover
Unused budget can roll over to the next period when enabled—useful for irregular spending like clothing or home maintenance.
Common mistakes
- Expecting budgets to move wallet balances — Budgets track limits; wallets track account balances.
- Counting transfers toward category budgets — Transfers between your own wallets are not category spend.
- Forgetting alerts — Enable budget alerts before you overshoot.
