Privacy tiers explained
Guest (local), standard sync, and optional E2EE—pick your tradeoff.
Expense Trail offers three privacy tiers. You can start local-only and upgrade only if you want multi-device sync or household.
Three tiers
| Tier | Data location | We can read entries? |
|---|---|---|
| Guest mode | Device only | No server copy |
| Standard sync | Encrypted in transit; stored for sync | Yes—for sync, reports server-side features, push |
| E2EE sync | Ciphertext on server | No—we cannot decrypt without your phrase |
Choosing a tier
- Guest — maximum local control; no household cloud features.
- Standard — simplest multi-device sync.
- E2EE — shared household with encrypted amounts on server; save your recovery phrase.
