Pricing & business model
Is Expense Trail really free?
Yes. Core tracking, budgets, reports, split bills, receipt attachments, guest mode, and data export are all free on web, iOS, and Android — no subscription, no trial period, and no paywalled features. Is Expense Trail really free?
Are there ads?
No ads in the app — not now, not ever. We do not sell, license, or monetize your expense data for advertising. Optional analytics on the marketing website run only if you explicitly accept the cookie banner.
How do you make money without ads?
The core app is free and we do not monetize user data. We may introduce optional paid features or tiers in the future, but the core expense tracking experience will remain free.
Account & getting started
Do I need to create an account?
No. Guest mode is the default — the full app runs locally on your device with no sign-up required. Create a Google or Apple account only when you want cloud sync, household sharing, or cross-device access.
Does Expense Trail link to my bank account?
No. Expense Trail is manual-entry only — you log what you spend, when you spend it. There is no bank connection, no automatic import, and no access to your financial accounts. You decide exactly what gets recorded.
Can I switch from guest mode to cloud sync later without losing my data?
Yes. Sign in with Google or Apple at any time from Settings, and your existing local data migrates to the cloud automatically. You can also reverse this — sign out and continue in guest mode with all data intact on your device.
Which platforms are supported?
iOS, Android, and web (also installable as a PWA on supported browsers for an app-like home-screen experience without visiting a store). Platform guides
Can I install the web app on my phone's home screen?
Yes — open the web app in Chrome, Safari, or a Chromium-based browser and use the Add to Home Screen prompt. The installed PWA works offline and behaves like a native app.
Privacy & security
Can Expense Trail read my data on the server?
Depends on your sync tier. Guest: nothing on the server. Standard sync: yes, for sync and push — we do not sell it. E2EE sync: ciphertext only, we cannot read your amounts. Privacy tiers explained
What is stealth mode?
Stealth mode hides all amounts on the Dashboard and Transactions screen — balances show as dots or dashes so a glance from anyone nearby reveals nothing. Press and hold any value to reveal it temporarily. Enable it in Settings → Account → Privacy.
What is the Privacy Checkup wizard?
A guided walkthrough inside Settings → Account → Privacy that helps you activate the right protection in the right order: stealth mode, PIN and biometric lock, E2EE sync, and encrypted backups. It explains each option in plain language so nothing important gets left unconfigured.
How does E2EE work and what happens if I lose the recovery phrase?
With optional E2EE sync, expense amounts and sensitive fields are encrypted on your device before upload — only ciphertext reaches our servers. Your 12-word recovery phrase is the only decryption key. An optional key escrow feature stores an encrypted copy of your master key on your account so a new device can unlock with the phrase. Without the phrase, amounts on new devices stay locked. Back up your phrase when prompted during E2EE setup. E2EE unlock & escrow
What is key escrow?
An encrypted copy of your master key stored on your account — wrapped with your recovery phrase — so a new device can unlock E2EE data using the phrase rather than the raw key. Master key escrow
Why are my amounts locked after I signed in?
E2EE is active and this device needs your recovery phrase to decrypt. Use the unlock banner or go to Settings → Account → Privacy. E2EE unlock & escrow
Does the app read my clipboard?
Only if you turn on clipboard transaction suggest, which is off by default. When active, the app reads your clipboard once when it opens to suggest a pre-filled amount — your clipboard content is never uploaded. Turn it off in Settings at any time.
What is SQLCipher and how does it protect my data?
Release builds of the iOS and Android apps store the local database using SQLCipher — an encrypted version of SQLite. Your data is encrypted at rest on the device. Web and Expo Go development builds use standard browser storage, which has different security characteristics (clearly noted in the app).
Logging & tracking
How do I log an expense quickly?
Tap the centre + button on any tab to open the speed dial, then choose Add Expense. Fill in the amount, category, wallet, payment method, date, note, and any tags — or just the amount and category. Optional clipboard suggest can pre-fill the amount from something you just copied. Swipe left on any entry to edit or delete it instantly.
Can I track income as well as expenses?
Yes. Log income entries — salary, freelance, rental, and more — alongside expenses in the same Transactions tab. The dashboard shows income vs expense totals and net balance for any date range. Cash flow reports break down income vs spending over 3, 6, or 12 months.
Can I attach receipts to expenses?
Yes — attach JPEG, PNG, WebP, or PDF receipts to any entry. Receipts are stored in your own cloud provider (Amazon S3, WebDAV, or Cloudinary) or ours, depending on your Settings configuration. Nothing is uploaded without your explicit setup.
What are payment methods and how do I customize them?
Payment methods represent how you paid — cash, credit card, debit card, UPI, bank transfer, and more. You can rename, reorder, and hide payment methods to match exactly what you use. Opening balance adjustments per payment method let you start tracking from your current real balance.
Can I customize categories?
Yes. Expense Trail has separate category lists for expenses and income. Add custom categories with any of 80+ icons and a choice of colors, rename or reorder built-in ones, and hide categories you never use. Changes sync across devices when cloud sync is on.
What are tags and how do I use them?
Tags are freeform labels you add to transactions for cross-category tracking — for example, work-trip, tax-deductible, or a client name. Add up to 20 tags per entry. Filter your Transactions tab and all reports by tag to see a project, trip, or event in one view, regardless of category.
Budgets & alerts
How do budgets work — per payment method or per category?
Both. Set monthly limits per payment method (credit card, cash, UPI, etc.) and separate category budgets (Dining, Shopping, Transport, etc.). Category budgets support rollover of unused amounts and a starting carryover balance. Dashboard progress bars update in real time as you log expenses.
How do I get budget alerts before I overspend?
Enable push alerts in Settings → Money → Budgets and choose your thresholds: 50%, 70%, 80%, or 90% of a budget. Alerts fire on-device in guest mode and via push notification when sync is enabled. Dashboard progress bars also turn amber near the limit and red when over budget.
Wallets, currencies & goals
What is a wallet and can I have more than one?
A wallet is a spending ledger — a bank account, cash in hand, a credit card, or any money bucket you want to track separately. Each wallet has its own currency and balance. Create as many as you need, transfer between wallets with exchange rate support, and filter the entire dashboard, transactions, and reports by wallet.
How do I transfer money between wallets?
Tap the + FAB and choose Wallet Transfer. Select source and destination wallets, enter the amount and exchange rate if the currencies differ, and the transfer appears in both wallets' histories. Transfers are neutral — they do not count as income or expenses.
How does savings goal tracking work?
Create named goals with a target amount and optional deadline. Contribute from any wallet, withdraw if plans change, and review your full contribution history. Progress appears on the dashboard and in the Goals report. Set up a recurring contribution — for example, automatically move a fixed amount toward a goal every month.
What currencies and number formats are supported?
Over 150 currencies. You can set a default currency per wallet and use exchange rates for cross-wallet transfers. Four number formats are available (e.g., 1,234.56 or 1.234,56) to match your locale.
Reports & insights
What kinds of reports does the app provide?
Four built-in report views:
- Weekly summary — day-by-day chart, top categories, income sources, payment-method breakdown, and week-over-week comparison.
- Cash flow — income vs expenses over 3, 6, or 12 months with a Sankey flow diagram and what-if savings scenarios.
- Bill calendar — next 14 days of scheduled entries with projected inflow and outflow.
- Goals report — savings goal progress and contribution history.
All views are filterable by wallet, category, tag, and custom date range.
Bills, wishlist & habits
Can I track recurring bills and subscriptions?
Yes. Create scheduled entries with daily, weekly, monthly, or yearly frequencies. They appear in the 14-day bill calendar with projected inflow and outflow. Pause any schedule without deleting it. Optional push reminders fire when a bill is due or overdue.
What is the wishlist and how does the cooling-off period work?
Add something you want to buy to the wishlist instead of logging it as an expense. It sits for 48 hours — if you still want it after that, you can convert it to a real expense with one tap, or dismiss it. Items already have "enough saved" status based on your wallet balances.
How does the no-spend streak work?
The streak counts consecutive days with no discretionary spending. You choose which categories count as essential (e.g., groceries, utilities, rent) and those are excluded — so the streak reflects impulse-buy-free days, not frugality for its own sake.
How do place reminders (geofence) work?
Save up to 10 locations — a supermarket, gym, favourite restaurant. When you enter or leave a saved place, the app sends an on-device nudge to log an expense. Location data is stored only on your device and never transmitted to our servers. There is no continuous GPS tracking.
Sharing & collaboration
Split bills or shared household — which do I need?
Splits track who owes whom across friends, roommates, or one-time events — no cloud account needed for local IOU contacts. Household is a shared partner ledger where each expense is individually marked shared or private. Split vs household
Can we split bills without another app?
Yes. Split any expense with local IOU contacts (tracked only on your device) or cloud buddies connected via a TRAIL- code or QR scan. Choose equal, exact, percent, or custom shares, add itemized line items for complex splits, and use the built-in settle-up to clear debts. How to split a bill
What is a TRAIL- code?
A short shareable code (format: TRAIL-XXXXXX) that lets a contact connect to you as a cloud buddy without exchanging account details. Share it in any messaging app or let them scan the QR version. Cloud buddies can split bills and settle up with cross-device sync.
How does debt simplification work?
After splitting multiple bills among several people, balances can get complicated. Debt simplification calculates the net amounts and shows the minimum number of payments needed to settle everything — instead of many back-and-forth transfers. Record each settle-up directly in the app to zero out the balance.
Can my partner and I share a ledger?
With cloud sync, create a household and invite your partner via a link or QR code. Mark each expense or savings goal as shared or private — shared items appear in their lists and reports; private ones stay yours alone. Optional E2EE keeps shared amounts encrypted on our servers.
Notifications & widgets
What push notifications are available?
Budget alerts (at 50/70/80/90% of your limit), daily logging reminder, scheduled entry due/overdue/tomorrow reminders, weekly summary, and monthly recap. All are optional and individually toggleable in Settings → Alerts. When sync is on, push bodies can hide amounts and category names for privacy on your lock screen.
What home-screen widgets are available?
iOS and Android widgets include: spending today, budget pulse (current vs limit), savings goal progress, wallet balances, and split settle-up summary. Choose the one most useful to you and place it on your home screen — no need to open the app.
Sync & backups
What is LAN sync and when should I use it?
LAN sync pairs two of your devices on the same Wi-Fi and transfers data directly — no internet, no server, no cloud. Start a session in Settings → Sync → LAN sync, scan the QR code on the other device, and sync. Ideal for travel, restricted networks, or anyone who prefers to keep all data completely offline.
How do backups work?
Three options:
- Export JSON or CSV anytime from Settings — the most portable format.
- Password-encrypted backup file — store it anywhere (email, USB, cloud drive of your choice).
- Scheduled cloud backup to bring-your-own storage: Google Drive, Dropbox, WebDAV, iCloud, Amazon S3, or Cloudinary.
Import an encrypted backup on any supported device to restore. Backup guide
Can I import data from another expense app?
You can import a previously exported Expense Trail JSON or encrypted backup file. Direct import from other apps (Mint, YNAB, Splitwise, etc.) is not currently supported — use the CSV export from those apps and log a summary opening balance in Expense Trail to start from your current position.
Are widgets and geofence reminders available?
Yes — home-screen widgets on iOS and Android, and on-device geofence exit/entry reminders (not continuous GPS). Widgets · Geofence
Customization & language
What languages and currencies are supported?
14 languages: English, Arabic, German, Spanish, French, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian, Turkish, Urdu, Vietnamese, and Chinese (Simplified). Over 150 currencies. Four number format options. Light, dark, or system-matched theme with a custom accent color.
Can I change the theme or accent color?
Yes — go to Settings → General → Appearance. Choose light, dark, or auto (follows your device setting), then pick a custom accent color from a full color picker. Changes take effect instantly everywhere in the app.
